Dress Like You Mean It: The Power of Fashion in Shaping First Impressions

First impressions happen in as little as seven seconds, and in that window no one is reading your resume. They are reading your outfit, your posture, and the energy you walk in with. Here is my full feature on why intentional dressing lets you command a room before you say a word.

People judge. Fast. Before you say hello, they have already sized up your outfit, your posture and your energy. That is not cynical. That is just human.

And here is the thing, that is good news.

Because what you wear is one of the few things you have complete control over. So the question is not whether people are reading you. They are. The question is, are you saying what you mean?

Seven Seconds. That Is All You Get. Science backs this up. People form first impressions in as little as seven seconds. In that window, your brain is not processing resumes or credentials, it is processing you. Your clothes. Your posture. The energy you walk in with.

We are wired this way. It is evolutionary, a fast scan system designed to assess confidence, competence and connection before a single word is spoken. Fair or not, this is how it works. And once you accept that, you stop fighting it and start using it.

Your Outfit Is Already Talking.Think of what you wear as a non verbal language. Every choice sends a signal whether you intend it to or not. Research consistently shows that people read wardrobe cues almost instantly.

Structure signals confidence and leadership.Softness signals approachability and warmth.Color signals emotion and how you lead. Fit signals discipline and attention to detail.

Every piece you put on is communicating something before you ever get the chance to introduce yourself. The only question is whether you are sending the message you mean to send.

The Science Behind What You Wear. Here is something that might surprise you. Your outfit does not just affect how others perceive you. It affects how you perform.

This is known as enclothed cognition, the psychological connection between what you wear and how you think, move and lead. When your clothing aligns with your identity, your presence follows naturally.

You do not have to manufacture confidence. It shows up on its own.

Purposeful dressing creates grounded confidence.

Hesitant Dressing Creates Distraction.Your color palette, your silhouette, your fit, these are not just aesthetic choices. They are the architecture of how you show up. When they reinforce your intention, everything clicks. When they compete with it, people feel the disconnect even if they cannot name it.

The White Suit Moment.A few weeks ago, I attended a fashion awards ceremony in New York City. The room was filled with press, industry heavyweights, designers, celebrities and the major players shaping NYC fashion. This was not a spectator sport. I was there to work the room, to reconnect with old contacts and forge new ones. To be seen as a peer. An equal. Someone who belongs.

So I Made a Deliberate Choice. It was a beautiful 80 degree morning. I wanted something that honored the season without sacrificing authority. I chose a white suit from Zara, crisp, clean, commanding, paired with a black tank and open toe platforms for elevation and ease. Hair slicked back in a low ponytail. And because I am a stylist after all, I added a Pucci bag, a pop of color, a wink of personality, proof that I know the rules well enough to play with them.

Every Detail Was Intentional. Before I said a word to anyone, an attendee stopped me and asked if I was one of the presenters.

That is what intentional dressing does. It commands the room before you ever open your mouth.

Who Are You Dressing For?The most powerful outfits are not the most expensive or the most on trend. They are the ones that feel true.

Fashion gives you the ability to claim your identity by not faking it but stepping into it. To show up as the version of yourself you are becoming, not just the one you have always been.

Ask yourself honestly:What colors make me feel most alive? What silhouettes feel natural on my body?Does this outfit reflect where I am going or where I have been?

When your style aligns with your identity, something shifts. You carry yourself differently. You take up space more naturally. And people respond before you have said a word.

Confidence Is the Real Outfit. It is not just what you wear, it is how you wear it.

You can be dressed head to toe in designer pieces and still disappear if you are uncomfortable or hiding. Conversely, someone in a simple, well fitted outfit who walks in with conviction? Magnetic.

When you feel good in what you are wearing, you stand taller, engage more freely and show up more fully. That authenticity is what people remember.

Own the Room, On Your Own Terms.Dressing intentionally does not mean dressing to impress everyone. It means expressing yourself fully, authentically, unapologetically. Not every room will have been designed with you in mind. Not every standard of professional will reflect your culture, your body or your background.

But that is exactly why showing up with intention matters. When you walk in dressed like you belong because you do belong, you are not just making a first impression. You are quietly rewriting the narrative of who gets to command a room.

Stop Shrinking. Start Showing Up.When your outer world aligns with your inner one, when what you wear reflects who you truly are and where you are genuinely headed, walking into any room becomes less intimidating and more intentional.

I work in this industry every day. And even I make the conscious choice every single time to show up fully. To not play it safe. To dress not just for the room I am walking into, but for the woman I am becoming.

That white suit was not luck. It was a decision.

So wear what feels like you. Loud or quiet. Bold or minimal. Let your color palette reinforce your intention. Let your silhouette support your presence. Let every detail work for you.

Wear what supports your success. Wear what aligns with your identity. And always wear what helps you connect, inspire and show up as the most powerful version of yourself.

Don't shrink. Show up.

Ready to stop hiding and start showing up?
